Rear axle bearing question. 108

Hi All
I wanted to clarify that the rear axle bearings rely solely on bearing grease for lubricant , not the rear diff oil. I have removed both rear axles and have the bearings and various seals and paper gasket on order. From what I have read in the manual the chamber formed between the two seals (inner and outer) has to be filled with bearing grease as does the bearing itself. Is this correct? When I removed the axles there seemed to be little to no grease on the bearings? Maybe it all run out due to gasket failure?
Thanks John.

You are correct. The rear bearings have an inner seal to separate it from the dif and an outer seal to keep out dirt etc. The space between them is lubricated by bearing grease.

When I did my rear bearings, I had the same scenario. My inner seals were shot and the fluid from the differential had flushed all the grease out of the bearings.....but they were still running.
