Pondering a '74 280c

A family friend is thinking of selling me a '74 280c. I've seen a few pics and it looks clean inside and out but obviously looks can be deceiving.

I'm going to look at it this week and have been browsing the net looking for information.

All I know is the year, model, it has 179k miles, and it supposedly has newer brakes and a recently rebuilt carb. After that, I don't know a ton.

Is there anything that is commonly problematic with this model?

Any words of wisdom?

Check for three things: Rust. Rust. And Rust.

I would walk if you find next to any.

I agree, these cars are pretty foolproof mechanically (although 180K and 40 years are no joke), but it's the bodies that bring the nastiest surprises.

Thank you for the advice. I'm in the midwest so rust is obviously an issue.

Anything mechanically that is known to be a common and expensive issue?

(And yeah...thinking rationally...for whatever reason, I LOVE the older Merc coupes)

Take it for a long drive and do a bunch of hard braking.

Take a pick and poke around the wheel arches, near the jack points, and above the headlights.

Take a hard look under the mat in the trunk and in the trunk tire wells.

Test the heater and heater fan in all speeds. Test the wipers.

How much are they asking for it?

Seriously, rust is a cruel mistress. And those years were not well protected.

Check the windshields front and rear for fogging in the lower corners. It is a sign of leaking into the compartment.

Check the frame where the steering gear box mounts for cracking.
