And after all that, check for rust again. My 280C was a good looking gal, but she has a bunch of nasty surprises under her bustle.

I truly believe there are no bad coupes, but this is not a good year. Big bumpers, troublesome Solex 4A1 carb, anemic M110 engine, terrible early emissions system. Don't pay or improve it much because there's very little upside.

I decided to be logical and not look at it:

-I have a garage but I would have to leave my daily driver (a w203 sedan) outside.
-I'm not terribly mechanical although i can manage w/ explicit instructions
-I should boost my savings before buying a project car

Thank you all for the suggestions and rest assured, I will own a vintage Merc coupe someday!

OK fine. How about this:

New project! It has rotted floorboards, the fenders are more bondo than metal, the carb is shot, the fuel lines rotted, the brakes seized, the diff oil has never been changed, the tranny doesn't shit out of 2nd gear, and the seats have been gnawed by beavers, but I know a guy whose cousin totally restored a much worse version on his frat house's lawn over the course of a weekend using just a screwdriver and pliers so I figure it shouldn't be too bad.

MERCEDES RAWWWRRRR!

(or did you just want me to buy some 70s/80s tuner wheels?)

That's more like the way I think most of these threads go.
