My 1963 220 SE Coupe

Hello all,

My name is Julian. I'm 31 years old, I live and work in Vancouver, BC. I've been a car enthusiast for years, owning several different vehicles (mainly Volkswagens). This is my first Mercedes.
If anybody is on Instagram, my handle is @julianrhakim . Feel free to follow.

This car came to me through a family friend. An opportunity to own a vintage classic Benz like this was on the table, and I couldn't refuse.

I don't know too much about the car just yet—I drove it home yesterday.
1963 220 SE, low millage, converted to carburator (I still have the fuel pump, but none of the other fuel injection components). The seats were recovered (poorly) and quickly so the car could be used in wedding photos several years ago. I believe the car is stock, other than the conversion and the seat upholstery.

The car broke down on my way home yesterday. We charged her up for several minutes and and carried on. I've since pulled the generator to diagnose the charging issue.

I look forward to sharing the progress of this car with the community. I'm here to learn from the forum and to take part in constructive discussions.
I plan on keeping the car period correct and in original condition. Over the winter, I plan on refurbishing the wooden interior trim and dash pieces as they are sun-damaged.

Now, on to the important stuff:

Scoot, Teutone, Zeitgeist and 3 others like this.

Welcome and congratulations!

I believe the w111/112 coupes are really shooting up in value recently. So despite the engine swap from an injected engine, that sounds like you got a great deal from a generous family friend (but I have no clue what you might have paid).

I am not familiar with the alternator / generator setup on these cars, but my first stops would be:

1) autohausaz to check and see their pricing for an alternator/generator.

2) subscribe to the EPC, which is free with a Credit card with a US address. You can get all your part members there.

3) proof of ownership to the classic center for the data cars and original options.

4) world upholstery and Gahh for pricing on new seat upholstery.

5) with the data cars from the classic center, investigate whether your engine still has the original bottom end, or whether the whole engine has been swapped. I know that the carbed 2.8 m130 (later engine) blocks do not work with an injection system, but don't know any reason that an injected block could not be used with a carbureted system. So maybe it is possible that you still have the original lower end, which I believe would make your car more valuable and more original, and possibly able to return it to 100% original increasing it's value. That's just my opinion, and of course only applies if you have the original block. I would be interested in hearing from others on this topic.

She's a real beauty. I'm wondering how long that injection pump can continue to rotate with the engine while no fuel is running through the barrels and delivery valves, without these eventually seizing up. Returning the engine back to stock is the best option, but be prepared to fork over astonishing amounts of funds, as everything associated with that injection system is priced like royal jewels.

Thanks, everyone. I'm learning a lot about these cards already and meeting some interesting people because of it!
