W114 rocker arm spring issue

When I removed the valve cover on my 1972 250 sedan,

I noticed one of the springs was out of place on one of the rocker arms and very loose and doesn't stay in place when you put it back in its just kind of layed there.

Any idea how I would go about fixing this?Is this a valve clearance issue? and what kind of symptoms would fixing this alleviate?

Thanks so much for helping me along guys!

The springs are supposed to help hold the rocker arm against the cam and reduce "slap" that could cause wear and noise. I have never seem one slip off like this. It could be that the spring has lost its tension, or something is wrong with the groove in the rocker.

It should take a fair amount of force to get the spring on the rocker. If it doesn't, replace it. If it does, then replace the rocker.

I believe the groove in the rocker is worn, I have a spare luckily. Thanks so much for the response.

I see the spring to the right seems to be centered on the rocker arm. I just pulled the valve cover from an m130 and noticed that a few springs were also off center. I'm not yet aware of whether they are under tension or not though. (The engine is seized.)
