Electrical Short: W115 ('71 220D)
For two years, I have chased a gremlin through the wires of this car. It is an intermittent and variable short in the ignition. Sometimes it happens when I push the starter button. Sometimes it is when I pull the glow plug lever all the way out. Whenever it happens, the car is dead for a while, as if the short is still there even with the glow plug lever in and the key off. I've blamed the glow plugs, the starter, the alternator, the ignition switch, the glow plug switch and the neutral safety switch on the transmission. I've pulled them all out and they are fine. For the first time, though, I was able to reverse the short -- by moving the light switch to the left. I had never considered the light switch. Electricity comes from the battery to the switch and then to the ignition without going through the switch.
Has anyone had a short in the light switch like this? I need to put a few things back together before I take out the instrument cluster....again.
