76 115 with 77 123 engine?

OK so my car is a 1976 300D w115.. It was made in February of 1976. Its all original, and yet it has the 183ci engine. (617.912). This is causing me a lot of issues purchasing parts. I thought they only put the 183ci in 77 w123's??? I've searched and searched and cannot find an explanation. What is going on here? Is it possible they used up some 115 bodies laying around and just fitted them with the 77 engine or what?

No, it's impossible. The engine (or engine block) was swapped.
What is full engine-Nr. stamped on the engine's block?
What type of the IP is on the engine?

Excuse my stupidity, but where would the nr be located? And what do you mean by IP? Lol..
However, the factory tags on the car state it has the D-5 engine family 183ci.

And when I went to purchase an oil change, the guy at the parts store asked me if it was made before February or after. Because there was two different oil filters coming up for it. Turns out I needed the after February filter, he gave me the pre February and it was almost twice as tall as what mine took! Lol. So something is clearly going on here from the factory.

Also I've noticed some other small strange things, people say its supposed to have a 20 some gallon fuel tank. Mine holds 14 gal. I thought maybe someone had replaced the fuel tank along the way, but it appears to have the same factory undercoating as the rest of the car, and fits up under there very nice. Soo idk??

IP = Injection Pump. Should find Engine Number down low on the driver side of engine block, near the Injection Pump. There are several members who can help with when the 617.912 engine was introduced. Clarkz71 may have input. Don

Aaah OK, gotcha! . I'll take a look on my lunch break, are the injection pumps numbered? Or is there a certain way to tell them apart? Once again sorry for my ignorance in the matter. This is the first diesel engine I've ever messed with.. Huge learning curve on all accounts for me lol.

I think the difference in the engines can also be determined by the placement of the oil filter housing. If your engine has the housing placed vertically like the above pic, then the engine originally came from a 123. The 115 housing is mounted lower down on the engine.

The 617.912 was introduced on the Typ 123 in February 1976.

My oil filter housing is lower mounted near the power steering pump. And I thought the W123 didn't come out until 77? Because 76 is the last year for the W115, or so I thought? Or did they have both in 76?

The 123.130 was available in the US from MY1977 (approx. 09/1976). But around the world, it was available from 02/1976.
