I live in Los Angeles and do a lot of junkyarding, I used to do a lot of ebay selling, and I'm burning out on it.

What I can tell you is that these days it is not unusual to go through a junkyard and every Mercedes that is W116/W123 or older has been stripped of all 4 doors, often the front fenders, sometimes the front clip. These go into shipping containers and then to Europe, I think Germany. The group (maybe there are many) is organized and thorough. I assume that these parts are being captured to support the German car market of collectors and probably for a good profit. A door at the junkyard here costs about $50 complete. Imagine what a good door shell is worth to someone restoring a car with a rusted door in Germany...

What I can also tell you is that 5 years ago it wasn't uncommon to see a W108 (or even a W111) at the junkyard, today it is rare. Today there aren't even that many W123 and W116 cars.

Currently: 1967 250 SL, 1963 220Sb, 1965 300SE Lang, 1971 280SE parts car, 1972 Alfa GTV, 1965 Alfa Duetto, 1993 BMW R100R
Past: 1971 250 C, 1985 300 TD, 1967 250 S, 1968 280 S,1981 300 D, 1982 280CE, 3 Facel Vegas, Borgward Isabella Coupe, Alfa 2600 Sprint, Volvo P1900 (yes), numerous less interesting Volvos, ...
