To be correct, the areas visible through the grille should be a satin black. These areas were hand-painted after body color was applied. At least this is the folklore as I understand it, and it's what I did when I restored my 280SL.
Yes, I agree - I am carefully inspecting the paint, and it seems to be the original stain black.
It is also more "aesthetic" as (especially in light colored cars) having a bright white behind the black stain grills looks wrong.
Can anyone confirm?
