somewhere on the web a few months ago I ran across new vinyl door sills. on your car the carpet goes up the side member.

http://www.authenticclassics.com/Lef...uth-002766.htm

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1514156...lpid=82&chn=ps

What do people do about the door sills? I was talking to Ramon in Bethlehem today and he seems to think that there is often vinyl or leather on the sills. Is that the fix? Or is that original in some cases?[/QUOTE]

Thank you!!

I certainly won't forget this when I get to this point with this project car.

I forgot to mention that I did install the back seat back, but didn't get nuts and washers on the studs in the trunk. The padding inside the back seat is toast, and the center armrest guides seem to be too wide to keep it inside its tracks. The seat back frame is a little bent too, making it near impossible to bolt in right now. Hopefully the drivers side seat belt retractor will come back into shape now that it isn't being smashed by a back seat that was improperly installed.

I did not get the seat bottom secured or even all the way in place as I wasn't even sure how it would clip into place. I wonder if there are some missing clips. Small potatoes.

Anyway. I'm pleased that it seems my transmission "leak" may have been the stereotypical "been sitting too long" MB three speed situation. My 1973 450sl started to lose lots of fluid if I ever let it sit too long. Regular usage seemed to make the leak go away. I think the fluid burning off the passenger downpipes may have been from fluid that missed the dip stick tube when the PO was trying to fill it. (I think he was getting rid of the car for several reasons, one being knee surgery and less mobility than before. With that it becomes easy to see why a guy would miss the dip stick tube with some trans fluid.)

So... Oil in the exhaust... Valve seals?

Although I've never done the valve seals on any car, I do happen to have a spare set of heads on the shelf in the garage at home that might be useful to understand how the job is supposed to be done.

Oh man. Things just went downhill really fast with this car.

I must have left my truck unlocked and some crackhead clearly went down my street opening doors and got into my truck. The glove box and console were wide open, and I immediately noticed that all my quarters were gone but pennies were left. This is the crackhead MO in my town. I don't get too upset about the quarters, but then I realize when I look at the w108, I am 99% sure I left the grill star and pedestal in the console and it's gone. Son of a bitch!

As the night goes on and I research where to buy a grill star, I mellow out and hope maybe I left the grill star in the trunk or something.

Then I realize that I think I left the keys to the w108 in the truck. This would not be too big of a deal if there weren't three keys, only one of which worked the ignition key. That tells me that some locks were changed on this car. Which ones? I have no idea honestly. Hopefully the ignition was not changed, as I believe that the passenger door opened with the same key that worked the ignition. So maybe the only lock replacement was for the driver door (and trunk?)

I guess I will put up a flyer around to contact me if the keys are found. The thief has virtually no chance of finding the w108 since it is several miles from my home.

Terrible luck! If only you had put a tag on those keys with the location of that beast! It could be somebody else's problem! Oh well you can't win em all!

@dgosh28 told me that a locksmith can come out and make me keys for every cylinder. Is that true?

I assume I would at least have key blanks as these keys are not at every corner hardware store (or any I have checked).

Since these are the old school keys, unlike those found on newer MBs like the 124, any skilled locksmith should be able to make those for you. I would insist on going with their highest quality steel blanks, rather than chromed brass

Thank you!

Are the good key blanks something I can get at the MB dealer?

I know I should probably buy the best key blanks, but I think just to get prepared for a locksmith, I want to get some key blanks on hand.

I just sold my 1972 250c last night, and no longer have any old MB cars, and don't have ANY old style keys to compare to (it try to slide into the locks) at the current moment. It looks like I need help determining what style key my 1973 280se 4.5 should have. I really appreciate if anyone can tell me if any of these would be the correct style. I would love to get "bang for the buck" and have many blanks because I know when I had a hardware store cut a key for me before, it would only work if inserted one way, not the other.

Can anyone tell me if any of these keys should be correct for my 1973 280se 4.5?

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=151668686799
^^ says "This key blank is compatible with most Mercedes Benz models 1973-1979", but I can tell you that my 1978 450slc 5.0 doesn't have this style, but maybe my 1970-1972 cars had this style. I don't know, but it seems clear to me that the description may not be trustworthy.

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=261740515664
^^ Looks right but says 77-85, which isn't right. That year description seems way too late for that style, maybe 67-75, but 77-85 seems way too late.

I forgot I had this key with my 1972 350sl 4.5 parts. I slid into all the locks, but I wasn't so lucky as to have it be able to turn anything.

Today I found my Bluetooth speakerphone plantronics k100 tossed in the weeds just a few feet from where my truck was parked. I searched long and hard, but didn't find any keys tossed in the weeds anywhere near.
