I think the pad was for noise reduction as the M117 engine emitted a fair amount of mechanical noise. I can't imagine heat would need to be managed as the sun would make the hood just as hot as the engine would. The pad on my '71 coupe looks like yours-it just fell on the engine in pieces. I planned on coating the underside with a sound/heat insulating product like Lizard Skin and then making a pad out of a more stable modern product to resemble the original.
