hey Flyboy how much would you pay for a W115 with 300,000? Sounds like you wouldn't even bother!

Any day now, not too often do they have carriers coming in from Reno to Boston. Supposedly the pickup date was the 27th but the company called with their excuse of running slow. As far as the miles go I was told by many to worry about the condition not the miles. I'll be happy if it goes another 100k. When would you guys say the 5 cylinder W115 engines start to crap out?

I don't know, but my guess would be when the owner start to treat them like shit, and ignore signs that a rebuild is required.

The OM61X engines are known to be long lived, and some have made to to nearly half a million miles. But as mentioned, indicated mileage is subjective, and conditional stresses and maintenance are the real contributing factors of longevity..."it's like a box of chocolates"

At this age and miles, you are pretty much rebuilding the engine as you go. It depends on what the previous owners did that will determine how much more road time you get without spending a pile of cash. Injectors, valves, glow system, transmission, cooling lines, fuel system, gaskets. If that was addressed, you are a bit ahead. If ignored, those are tasks you will undertake.

By 450k miles, I would have built a good stash of cash so you can tear down and rebuild the engine and other systems. Catch it before wear gets out of hand and damage is greater than the value of rebuilding.

You're absolutely right, in all likelihood I wouldn't bother. I might pay $500 for it as a parts car, IF it had enough nice parts and IF I had a nice W115 that might need those parts in the future.

The owner just got back to me. It seems he was a great owner, took very good care of the car. Here's what he told me.

Replaced the camshaft & followers at 204K; The original cam had a lobe going flat. Replacement cam, towers and followers were from a 1980 NA 617. The early 617s had some cam issues the first couple of years, the later cam was identical but of better material.
Replaced/ upgraded the glow plugs to pencil type plugs at the same time. The old style relays won’t sustain these higher output plugs so I installed a manual glow set up. It’s a push button at the bottom of the dash to the left of the column. Runs through a relay on the left fender well next to the battery. Simple and fool proof for 6 years.
Replaced the injectors with Bosch rebuilt ones around 210K.
Serviced the trans around the same time.
Rebuilt the vacuum pump two years ago.
Had the radiator re-cored last summer and stalled a larger fan from a 300SD.

I adjusted the valves roughly every 12K. Its about due for it again.
I’ve ran Shell Rotella 15w40 since I’ve owned it. I’ve ran this oil in trucks and heavy equipment for over 30 years, have never had an oil related failure.
I replaced the oil pan heater last fall.

I know all know you all are dying for pictures of the damn thing already. The shipping company should be picking up the car in 3 days and should arrive at my house by June 14th.
