Yes. I also hope that this car doesn't arrive and turn out to be a total turd of a vehicle.

Yeah you and me both. That's the chance you have to take buying cross country. Better than anything in New England, you were right Fonzi. If the car truly is rust free, maintained, and has been garaged it's whole life as the owner said it's totally worth all this trouble. You saw the car Fonzi if you remember (one with the tinted windows). Managed to get the price down to $1500 for it having close to 270k miles to it. Seeing I'm only going to be driving it 3 months out of the year it shouldn't be a problem. I have taken every precaution not to get screwed over and all I can do now is cross my fingers. I have $3000 to put into the car regardless.

I must be missing something. $1,500 for the car, $1,250 for shipping, plus the other $3,000 you have budgeted makes $5,750. All that for a car that has 270K miles, makes more racket than a Belieber on a sugar high, and makes molasses flowing uphill in Colchester in January look like an F-22. I respect the fact that our Mercedes hobby is not always over and above rational, as well as that it's your time and your money, but I confess myself unconvinced that it's worth "all this trouble".

I must admit your use of vocabulary is spot on. This is a mad deal but it's the best I could do. Believe me when I tell you I could not find a rust free W115 in New England. After searching for 3 months I gave up and looked to the west. Sure enough I found examples in better condition for way less. I'd say the value of my future W115 at least doubles in Boston compared to sunny Reno. People are willing to pay more up here for one in great condition. No this does not make any financial sense but I'm not looking for an investment car. Less then 4k to get this baby on the road is worth it for me. Let's be honest, a W115 with a price tag of $2k, $3k or even $4k is still going to be crap.

Am kind of hoping I don't have to spend the rest of my savings on the car which is really put aside for maintaining the car every year. I heard $1000 a year give or take to keep up and running. Oncd the engine craps out I'd be that crazy to pay the $5k for an engine swap. Reason being in the next 5 years this W115 is going to turn into a peice of art worthy of being on the showroom floor. Laugh me off the stage but this will continue to be an expensive project, one I look forward to taking on.

270K-mile car for $1,500 was "the best you could do"? Either your standards are a tad low or you spent all your time and effort on this thread rather than on the car search. Maybe both...

In the words of the great American philosopher Jim Carrey, Awrighty Then! P. T. Barnum comes to mind, too.

Anyhoo...we're all waiting with bated breath to see those pics. Until then, it sounds like the deal is done, so there's nothing to be gained by brow-beating the lad into submission.

Here guys. I've got pics of my sight unseen purchase. Come take a look and beat it up. Tell me what you see is wrong. Tell me I was stupid to buy it at 3/4 of a grand.

A very close friend just purchased a "rust free" '76 240D Automatic with Factory AC. 160k miles and a whole bunch of oil leaks for $2500 from North Carolina. IMO, he's got another $3000 to spend on it to renew it (rubber bits n seals mostly) to excellent standards and then he will have one attention grabbing, economical daily driver for under 6 grand.

Hard to beat, IMO!
