Starter doesnt work

Dear all,

I have a problem with my 1985 w123 300tdt.

When I try to start my car, the starter won't engage. I know that there are basically three potential causes;

1) Broken solenoid or starter
2) Neutral Safety Switch
3) Broken Ignition Switch

When I try to start my car, I hear a 'Click' in a small relay box on the front fender, located at the driver's side, basically on top of the wheel. Since I hear a click, is correct to assume that it not a broken ignition switch, because apparently, there is power going to this relay? On the other side, I've read that when the key doesn't spring back when you try to start it, it is very likely that the ignition is broken. This is unfortunately the case with my ignition.

Any help is welcome!

Thanks!

First thing I would check is your battery.

You may want to head over the the W123 forum for more specific advice.

If it starts in neutral, obviously the switch is misaligned or in need of a clean. I have zero experience with the diesels, but if the starter relay is located where you are mentioning, you might swap it for a known good one.

Does it glow fully?

Check the negative lead to the starter. It tends to loosen in a diesel and kills the chance of turning over. There are also a few times the power lead will rattle to the point it gets metal fatigue and snaps at the connection lug. Usually related to engine mounts.

As for the ignition, pull it and have a reliable locksmith rebuild it.

the starter has a small wire going to it , you can jumpstart there with a small jumper to the battery plus .also near there , a junction box with wires to it , the purple one is the starter .also with a test lite , see if you have power at the starter small wire while cranking .
