Coolant loss

My 1992 300E has started using coolant. Some seems to be coming out of the exhaust pipe--don't notice any in oil, but uses a cup or so in a 20 mile round trip. Will this ruin the engine if I keep driving it, replacing coolant as it is used up? Is a head gasket replacement the only solution. Coolant reservoir has been replaced as have some of the lines. Any suggestions???

How many miles on the engine? this engine will at some time in it's life need a head gasket. very common they develop leaks. search the forum for info on this.

As for driving with a big internal leak, probably not a good idea. Could easily get worse and blow the gasket.

Do you have white smoke out of tailpipe?

300e coolant problem

There is white smoke out of the tailpipe and coolant does come out a bit when the car is parked. The car has almost 200,000 miles on it, body is in great shape. It does use oil, has since purchase in 1995, but there has been an oil leak lately around the head gasket. Looks like I had better check to see how much a head gasket will cost. There goes IRS refund plus!!! I love the car and hate to get rid of it.

The external oil leak is a sign also. I replaced the head gasket on my 300SE 2 years ago. I spent about $650 on parts, as I replaced pretty much every piece of rubber that is involved. plus full tune up, water pump, new head bolts, valve stem seals, etc.

Youch, sorry to hear of your problems. If you hadn't mentioned white smoke out the tail pipe, I'd have suggested checking the radiator cap. I had a slow loss issue which was cured with a replaced cap...

How does your oil look on the dipstick? If it's milky brown I suggest you change the head gasket before you do more damage.

Your engine is circling the drain - fix it immediately or the repair cost will jump out of reach when seizure occurs. Begin analysis by pulling the head and inspecting the head gasket.
