1975 280 W115 Mistery Fuel Pump...
Hello there, I am a bit perplexed by a couple issues... First, the issue with the 4A1 Solex and Second, the fuel pump that came with my car...
When I bought the car, it was rather hard to start, once it started and warmed, it would run fine until a small hill on incline which necessitated a bit of throttle. The car would just die and come to a stop. It would take a long time and many, many tries to get it to start again. At this point, the car is not very willing to move and would often die when D was engaged. Car was towed and the carburetor was removed and sent to be sonic cleaned. Carburetor came back, installed rebuild kit and put it all back together. Car started fine, but again, as soon as a little hill (or downhill or anything that requires more throttle than light cruising) the car would just die and come to a stop.
So, I removed the fuel pump and went to get a new one. However, I have not been able to find a replacement. All anybody carriers is the rod/spring actuated pump. However, mine is an arm operated unit. So, being frustrated with this, I tested the pump (manually) and it flows fuel... Now does it flow enough? I cleaned and reinstalled the pump and used new fuel filters.
So, being fed up with this, I bought a Redline Weber kit... Installed it and started the car. Car run magnificently until, guess what! more throttle was needed and it would die again. At this point, I decided to shoot myself and end it all!
Well, not really, but this is frustrating to say the least. I am almost positive that the pump is the problem. Car revs nicely when in neutral or park (no load conditions). However, I can't seem to find the replacement pump.
Ideally, I would like to stay stock (Solex 4A1 and mechanical fuel pump), but the idea of an electric sounds appealing since I can't find the original replacement unit.
Any thoughts on all these issues?
I am the second owner of this 41K mile survivor - I really want to keep it stock...
