alternator

I need to replace the alternator on my 75 280s. On line replacement costs run $75 - $200. Any suggestions where to look
Thanks

Garage
alternator

280s ?
Is that an m130 with zenith carbs?

Autohausaz carries them, but in researching one for my m130 w114, I realized that the alternators on the 4.5 m117 450sl cars are the same config, but just a little higher amps. I happen to have two of those (used) in my garage. So no need for me to go purchasing for my m130 w114.

Start with autohausaz and take note of the part numbers. There are likely tons of compatible alternators you could pick up.

Edit: oops... Ok. I see it's a 1975. That's a w116, correct? Is there really suck a thing as a 280s? Wouldn't it be a m110? And did
They make them carbed? 280s, not 280se? Edit: yep. Wow. Sure is. A solex carb you say here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/8755433-post.html

Sorry. I'm not sure if autohausaz comments will apply.

Are you sure you need the new alt? Sometime in the mid '70's MB alternators started having the brushes built into the voltage regulator which was attached to the back of the alternator. If you are lucky you have one of these and you can change brushes and regulator on your back under the car only having to remove 2 screws.

I think I can see the voltage regulator attached to the alternator. I'll crawl under to verify.
Thanks for the info

before you do that , when you turn the key on , does the battery light comes on , i ll bet it does not , if that is the case , you need new brushes on the voltage regulator .remove it [ 2 screws ] and you will see one worn brush to the point it looks dull compered to the other .[ very common problem ]

The battery light comes on when I turn the key and goes off when it start the engine. Here's what I've done so far testing the alternator... Bought new battery. Put multimeter on battery with motor off. It tested 12.7v. Then started engine, turned on lights, blower, radio ext. Meter showed it dropped down to 11.9v Revving the engine didn't make much diff. I got one quote of $750 to replace alternator and belt. Seems stupid high
