I got the car out on the road, running great, with lights. I can not get it into reverse, as first and second are flush against driver side of housing, and third and fourth are way over in the passengers knees. I'm looking at the schematic of the shift linkage to the bell housing rods and dogs etc. Can I access this from the top floor pan, or will I have to drop it?

Sounds like the bushings where the linkage rod connects to the transmission are shot.

Hate to ask a duplicate question to those that have seen my thread or hijacking this thread, but I have a 64 220se with a very sloppy as hell 4 speed on the floor. And out of two hours of trying, I managed to get the car in reverse, but there must be some trick to getting it in reverse because I can't find it. Anybody have a thoughts on this?

In neutral, pull the knob to the left and push it toward the dash.

Sounds like you have the same issue with the bushings on the transmission end of the shifting rod. They get brittle and basically disintegrate.
