w114 250c paint question

hello benzworld! i'm having my 1970 250c painted soon and had a few questions:

was the part of the body where the front license plate is bolted to originally painted body color or black/grey?

my paint guy notices that there is some sort of rhino coating (under paint) over this area as well as along the bottom of the sides of the car. is this correct and original?

any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Not the original paint. Not a coupe, but it is a w114, and it appears body color on this car. There's a bracket for the plate that obscures the area in the center.

It looks like the car really needs a euro plate to fill that gap between yhe lower bumpers.

The coating is much the same as the 3M rock guard coating that is often put on cars today. It's there, under the rocker panels, and on the fascia panel below the bumper.

And yes, that area should be body color.
