1984 300SD fuel sending unit float wire question

I had to pull the sending unit to clean and resolder the copper central wire
but one of the thin silver wires snapped when I was working on it. I got some
correct resistance wire to replace it but in looking at the two prongs at the bottom if you run the wire straight across it will touch the center rod and loop back up. should it be routed on the plastic only or is it supposed to touch the center rod? the pics i have found the wire is too fine to tell if it touches or not.
Thanks
