Adjust Belt - Generator Pivot - See picture
I'm trying to adjust the belt tension on my 1963 220S. It is NOT the car in the picture, that's my parts car which doesn't have an AC compressor bracket in the way so it's easier to photograph.
I'm not understanding this correctly and I know it's an easy question that someone will help me with.
In the picture:
Nut 1 is a lock nut
Nut 2 is a device to move the generator in and out thus adjusting the belt tension
Bolt 3 clamps onto the thing associated with Nut 2 (I think).
So my question is should bolt 2 be tightened when I adjust the Nut 2, or loosened?
In my car that I'm actually trying to do this to it is loosened and when I loosen the Nut 2 it creates space between Nut 2 and the clamp thing. Is it supposed to be pulling the clamp thing (and the generator) outward to tension the belt?
FWIW I also have (on the other car) the Nut 2 so far out that there is no longer room for a lock nut (Nut 1) which I think means I need to clean the threads on the shaft and screw it WAY in and get a belt that is slightly shorter.
Thanks for your help people.
