Engine Bay Paint Color W111

I am almost ready to paint my '61 W111 coupe and I am wondering about engine-bay paint color. Mine is black and I don't think that it had been repainted. I have seen several restoration photos of cars that seem to have original, body-color bays.

My car is DB516, medium red but I can't see any evidence of that color in the engine bay.

I have read pretty strong proof that the W113s were body color, but not a lot about the W111s....just images of other cars that seem to be body-color.

Mine is pretty early 111-021-12-017097 and has number 000026 of the .984 engine that only the coupes and cabs used....but I would think the first coupes and the thousands of sedans from '59, '60, and '61 had the same engine-bay paint plan.

In doing our strip-down of the car, we have seen evidence of panel repair (right door, right fender, hood) and respray, but I can't believe the whole car was painted or that the engine was ever pulled to paint the bay. And if it was, it wasn't a respray as on the body panels, because careful sanding never showed a layer of red in the bay.

I'd love to see anyone comments about original paint spec for engine bays on W111s and how folks think I should paint mine.

My 1962 W112 had a body colored engine compartment, and it was 100% original.

my car was repainted in 1976.
The engine compartment is now black.
but originally, the engine compartment was the body color of the car.
i sure like my black, very easy to maintain and keep clean.
but to to be totally true to MBZ, the engine compartment should match the body.

I'm currently working on early sixties era 110 and 111 model vehicles, and they both have body color engine bays.

In Australia, the only time cars had black engine bays was when they came in Complete Knock Down (CKD) kit form to be assembled in the local assembly line. So Oz-assembled finnies have black engine bays, but German built ones have body colour. I am not aware of any countries having built CKD coupes so I think the engine bay in your car needs to be body coloured.
Cheers, Drew

My unrestored W111 has a body color engine bay. The trunk is black inside.

Same here for my unrestored '62 220se coupe. Odd there is no evidence of red in the engine bay, and even as Drew said about AU-build 111's there were no coupes built there. The only other option I can think of presently is if the entire front from a black car was grafted on, but that evidence should be clear to you as it seems you have given her very close scrutiny.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am definitely going DB516 in the engine bay. Once I do so, I'll stop wondering why I can't find any sign of the original red.
