W108 Sedan 250S glove box light is strange

I got a glove box door from the junkyard today because it has an unusual glove box light built into it - the same light used on Pagodas, the 600, and 111 coupes. The installation looks very original but I can find no reference to this having been correct. FWIW the car was a Euro model and it was early. It had a bunch of strange switches also that I'll post in a separate thread.

Hi there, the glove-box light was never part of the W108 250S/SE. This seems to be done at a later stage by a previous owner and the light comes from the W111 convertible. The coupe also did not have it. The coupe and sedans had a front interior lighting near the internal rear view mirror. The convertible did not have it due to the soft top, so it was relocated to the glove-box cover. The car must have been either 1966 or 1967

It seems odd to me that the W111 coupe would not have it for the reason you state, since the light serves only as a glove box light and a map reading light (when glove box door is open) and not as a dome light. It's the same light that is in a 113 glove box.

I agree that it is not original to the car. I have removed it. If it had have been original the wood under the light installation would match the finish of the rest of the wood.

Looks like I have another item to put on ebay. Someone did a fair amount of work to put this light in the glove box, nicely done. Too bad I don't have an early W108 sedan anymore...

I agree with you, it seems odd, but at least to my knowledge that's the way Daimler-Benz did it in the 1960s. They used it only for their convertibles (W111, W113).

I just had a quick look at all my W111 coupe/cabriolet photos (some 500). No coupe has it.

Yes, coupes had the small, clear dome-type light affixed to the interior side wall of the glove box. It illuminates when opened.
