1980 300d looking for second opinions before purchase
I went and checked out a 1980 300sd just North of San Fran. CA
It is $900 and has 183k on the odometer but the owner, given the VIN issue I will mention later, and other things believes that is off - and I would not think that is to far fetched, hard to believe less then 8000 miles annually every year.
I checked for rust in all the regular areas (none under floor mats, none around hood springs, only a few small spot under the doors, some under the hood where the insulation has come off, and some on the exhaust pipe and here and there on the under body I would say no major rust - I did not get to check the jack mounts though).
There is no latch that keeps the trunk closed (easy to replace, I would think as long as I can find the part) and it appears that it either backed in to something or was bumped into, the rear bumper is a little askew but no major damage because of that.
It appears to have some sort of an oil leak but the hoses, firewall, radiator, etc. looks in good shape.
The rear window dash and front dash are in rough shape but the leather, upholstery, and other interior features are in pretty good shape - other then the radio having been taken out and the climate control and ash tray not being properly secured. The only other issue is some major fading around the door windows and the drivers door arm rest is very loose.
It does not shut off using the key (was told it was a vacuum issue and not the shutoff valve) and the only other mechanical issue is that the end of the exhaust had fallen off and has been reattached but should be done more permanently.
No major rust spots and the paint is in surprisingly good shape. It has a clean title, but it is a Euro import and she personally had to do a lot of work to figure out a VIN's issue when she went to register it.
Seemed strange to me that she does not want to drive it because she has to use the push stop button (she has a corporate job in the city) and wont pay to get it fixed because she knows it often goes out again (which is true).
I am planning on taking it to get looked at tomorrow before I make any moves (and hopefully have a compression test done) is there anything I am missing?
