heat from engine

just purchased a 1973 450 sl in pretty good condition. my first MB.
There is an excessive amount of heat coming into the front right and left sides from the engine although the temp gauge is at 175+ while running for an hour of driving. is there a way to insulate the heat from entering the seating areas?

Installing heat shields comes to mind. Something I use on my Fiat is ceramic fabric wrap - as wide as duct tape, one wraps exhaust headers, pipes, etc, to shield heat from radiating into the car and engine bay...

Check your heating knobs on the center dash control, they should be full down. If you move them just a little a switch come into action and opens the heating valve onto the engine bay, you will get hot water into the system and hot air on your fit. Also check the insulation on the openning flaps and if the operating valve is working correctly, they are prone to break and stay in open position. A picture of the openning valve attached.
