I just fixed a starting problem on my 4.5 280.
With the help of this forum i was able to fire her up once again!!
Well in the last few days i got it into my head i wanted to repair the heater controls and remove the entire dash for refinishing. While at the same time trying to figure out my starting issues.
I have removed quite a few bits and pieces so far including, glove box, radio, windshield trim, misc switches, steering wheel etc. o i nearly forgot the instrument cluster.
That was were my two jobs coincided
This morning i discovered my problem and fired the old girl up.
Lovely job, it runs like Swiss watch. Hang on a minute? Whats the sound?
What the f@#$ is that pouring out of the dash board!!!!!!! OIL!!!!!!!!
I forgot the oil tube in the back of the gauge cluster was disconnected
The mess was not good, the dials had oil pooling at the bottom of the glass.
After uttering a few words a little stronger than "o no".
I proceeded to disassemble the unit. Oil was all over the carpet and pooling in the dash. One good thing was that everything was out so it madei teasier to reach.
Here are some pix of my Sunday.
Two good things came of this.
1.My dials are now very, very clean.
2.My dash will never rust
All the best John.
