White Walls - W108 280SEL 4.5

Hello!

I'm currently running Michelin XWX's on my 280SEL 4.5. They are starting to rot, I would anticipate they are 10-15 years old. The question is, what is a suitable replacement tire? I like the look of white walls, but am not sure about thick or thin (stripe?). Can anyone post up some pictures and make a recommendation?

Thanks!

If you want XWX's Coker Tire Co. owns the molds and says they make them to Michelin
specs $$$$$$. I use 5/8 in. whitewalls on my 300SE Cab. but they're difficult to find,
Michelin doesn't make whitewalls any more in an appropriate size. Next time I need tires
I think I'll go with DiamondBack Tire Co.. They start with Michelin tires in a size of your
choosing and vulcanize a whitewall of any desired width on to the sidewall.

I used to have Kuhmo but they discontinued the white stripe. I now have Hankook 205/75-14. Ride well and are quiet.

Purchased at Wal-mart for $55each.

Just went to the garage to check the OEM spare in the trunk of my '72 280 SE 4.5. The white stripe is 5/8" as close as I could measure it. The picture shows replacement tires fitted years ago. Their stripes are also 5/8".

IMHO you are right on the money with the 5/8" stripe (or anything close).

Discreet, tasteful and appropriate to the car. Noticeable enough to compensate for the smaller vintage wheels (and higher-profile rubber) but not so wide as to offer up any gangster implication

I also like stone houses, wow!

Redline, please accept my apologies!! You were asking for humble opinions, and I came up with pictures of my car in order to bring some help in your quest to tire illumination. My initial option was the 5/8", but I could not find a decent set, so I had to go with the treacherous wide wall...then I have noticed the antagonism between my new set of tires and the car. At that very moment I had an epiphany: I have to repaint the car to match the tires!.....Big mistake!!!! Ever since, I hear banging noises from the trunk, and people keep ducking when I drive down the street.
Redline, if you are afraid to make a decision on your future tire set, not to worry my friend: the vast majority still follows the slogan: " De gustibus non est disputandum ". What brings satisfaction to your eyes is the most important aspect. And one more thing : Minimalistic was not important to Paul LeBraque, so don't be afraid to choose. Good luck!

Wow, Otto looks rad!

Thank you everyone for the replies!

Yes, I checked out replacement XWX's and they are big bucks. I'm not sure if they were originally spec'd on the 4.5. From what I read, they were developed for heavy cars + high speeds... higher speeds than the 4.5 can even achieve. It makes me wonder if they were original spec on the 6.3's. The spare in my trunk is original, and looks like the thinner white wall. I think that is what I will seek out.

I actually think the prettiest setup is with the early beauty dish wheels and the thin white wall.

Any other recommendations for the thin white wall?

I know that I'm in the minority, but I prefer the European look:

I'm running Michelin Defender 205/70R14's. Love them.
