W110 Trailing Arm Bushing has Fallen Down
I am in the process of slowly putting a rear end from a W108 into my Finnie. A friend and I used vaseline, a floor jack (actually two), and a big socket to force the donut bushing at the front of the rear trailing arm into position. We held everything in place, including the triangular bracket that goes at the front of the trailing arm, then used the socket on top of the floor jack to force everything up. We heard the bushing pop into place, and the front of the trailing arm went up (as far as it could go) to sit flush with the body.
We then installed and tightened the three triangular bracket nuts and bolts, used another floor jack to hold up the trailng arm, moved the first floor jack and socket, then installed and tightened the big bushing nut. We removed the floor jack and everything looked fine. Left the car sitting on all four wheels for a few months and everything looked fine.
I jacked up the car two weeks ago, put it on jack stands with the rear axle hanging. The front of the trailing arms is no longer up toward the body, and the donut bushing has fallen from the body nipple which it should surround. The triangular bracket is firmly bolted to the body, but the rear of it seems too low to keep the bushing up around the nipple.
is this normal when the rear axle is hanging? Did I miss / do something wrong?
