Post 3.5 rear diff

Hello,

Looking to change my rear differential on my 1970 280 SE convertible to a 3.5 rear differential. Do I need to source one out from a coupe or can I use one from a sedan?

Thanks

Same-same or to put it in the vernacular, no diff!

Much thanks. Easier to source a sedan differential than trying to track down a coupe donor.

Are you looking for a particular ratio? A 3.5 coupe is 3.69 and a 280SE 3.5 is 3.46 and a 280SE 4.5 is 3.27

I have sourced a rear differential from a euro 6.3. Any issues that I should be aware of before proceeding?

If I remember correctly, the air suspension cars do not have the bosses that the horizontal compensating spring mounts to - can anyone confirm this? Many people talk about converting air suspension cars to steel springs - you need to find out what was involved in this. How have they achieved the mounting of the compensating spring?

if your car is a 6 cyl (or a V8) the 6.3 diff is going to be pretty tall+ it's not a bolt in (GGR here has some experience with 6.3 axles) I would go with the 3.27 from a 280SE 4.5-it will bolt right in and drop your 60MPH RPM to around 2600. The air suspension 6.3 did not have a compensating spring.

Post 4.5 Diff

That is good to know. A 4.5 differential will be easier to locate. Dropping the rpms at cruising speed is my goal.
