I agree with Dr Eurocar. The M104 is the engine to use.
To clarify my recommendations.
If you are using the stock auto trans, then get a donor car and all the ECUs, there is one for the trans, and you will need the harness for the car, as it connects the motor ECU to the trans ECU.
If the car is an early one, and doesn't have an electronic trans, then you don't need the whole car. I am not sure when they made the change.
If you use a manual trans, then you don't need the whole car.
Dr Eurocar has more experience than me, and may be able to clarify more.
In my case, I was using a 1998 C230, which has the same trans as the E series and is an electronic trans. I bought parts from a donor car (went back many times, so it would have been better to buy the whole car. Hence, why I say to get a complete car.) I gave up on the Electronic trans and went to a manual trans.
