I have 12v at the coil at ign on and while cranking. Nothing coming out the ht lead. I'll need to borrow an ohm meter to check resistance. If the coil is ok I'm putting the points back in!!!

Likely Coil or ignitor unit is faulty but could be both.

Possibly, as you mentioned the smoke, why not install the points and condenser
This will enable a substitute check of ignitor and coil unit.

this car has electronic ignition controlled by pointes , it does not use a condensor , what looks like a condenser is a radio noise suppressor .so not needed .

Hi guys. I tested the coil all good.
To get the system in my own head...
There's a pos wire from the ignition switch it has 12v ignition on and cranking. I connected this pos side of the coil with the red wire from the igniter. The neg side of the coil is just connected to the neg side of the igniter. The car was driving on the points so I know everything like button and leads are fine.....
I removed some wiring when I changed out the coil. 2 ballast resistors and a suppressor and an earth from neg side of the old coil to ground. Any sparkies out there...

I'm thinking the unit is faulty. But it's brand new I never thought it would play up. I'd love to be able to test it so I could get warranty on it.
