Engine removal

I bought a 1969 280SE with a stuck engine (18 years in storage), I have been unable to free the engine. I pulled the head and found pitting so bad it will be impossible to bore the cylinders. I would like to pull the engine and leave the trans in the car, but I am unable to turn it to remove the torque converter bolts. Is it possible to pull the engine with the torque converter still attached?

I think it is much easier to pull the engine/trans as a unit and then break them apart. That is what I have done on admittedly newer W126 cars
