1958 300SL Gullwing

G'day,

just thought I'd introduce myself by showing a few pictures of perhaps my favourite classic of all time. The silver Gullwing was owned by uncle, an avid car collector from 1971 until he passed away. I found this picture of him competing in the Targa Tasmania in 1990 whilst looking at old family photos last week. It was sold around the late 90s and went interstate (Australia) and so the number plates were handed in. Just on Sunday at local car exhibition was another beautiful white 1955 Gullwing, formerly owned by Le Mans ace Vern Schuppen, which now has my uncle's old plates '300SL'.

Hope you enjoy them.

Edward

Just to pick nits: The last production Gull Wing was 1957 when the transition to the Roadster began.

Interesting. Maybe it was delivered to Australia in 1958 and first registered then? I'll do a little more research on that one, be nice to know why they had it down as a '58 model.

That could well be possible if your country considers the first date of registry as the "born on" date. Could also be family history got altered as time passed, confused with another car. If you gave the date card info it will tell you everything, and you can probably still find that since these cars are all known.

Thanks for sharing that Ed. The date on the car registration papers is what the authority uses for eligibility for our historic rego scheme and this problem has come up a lot. Sometimes a car may be imported maybe 5 years later and the date is that first rego date and then the owner of the car who knows fully well what year it was made has to go to great lengths to prove its eligibility. So even if it was australian delivered it could easily got to a showroom and then be first be registered the following year I would think.

My 450SLC 5.0 has the same issue. The car is a '78, #326, but the title says 1979. The difference is probably due to when the car was federalized here.

Just trying to post up more photos but having a little difficulty attaching them as it's instead asking for a URL. Once my website is built next month I'll have a full section with plenty of photos of the Gullwing and other cars that various family members have owned over the last 50 - 60 years if anyone is interested.
