See the red stuff that's in there now is definitely thinner than Dexron, I work at a full service shop, I deal with Dexron all the time. The only thing thinner than the stuff that's in there now is antifreeze.
I think I'm going to change it to Dex on monday after work.
I am familiar with the gear oil, pretty much all rear ends take the same thing (some might take synthetic but its all pretty close in viscosity), unless they have some sort of clutch inside them for AWD, or a limited slip device, and even then its usually just a LSD additive.
The manual transmission in a w114 is almost as hard to find as it is to find information on it.
The vast majority of cars will take ATF for power steering fluid (or just clear universal power steering fluid) excepting some japanese cars and some BMWs and Jags, and probably newer benz.
