Are you sure it is an SL and not an SLC? Production of the 500SL ran from April 1980- August 1989. 1980 production total was 501 units. Car is fairly rare (11,812 units over 10 years), but not nearly as rare as the 450SLC 5.0/ 500SLC ( 2,769 units over 4 years). A nice driver quality 500SL sold here recently for between $8,000- $9,000, if I remember correctly. If this car has been sitting for 15 years it will likely need everything and will probably bring considerably less due to the expense of bringing it back to life. These cars don't like to sit without being driven.

Can you post the vin? Mercedes didn't make a 500SL in 1977.

There is no such car. It may very well have the 5.0 liter aluminum block and the aluminum hood, but the fenders are steel. Who ever you are getting your information from doesn't know these cars, or at least the car they allege it to be. Posting the vin will clear up all the confusion. Also, if you want more verification of what has been stated here you can inquire in the 107 forum, but you might want to have pics, a vin, and an a completed profile before you wade in over there.

memories...12 years ago I owned a Mercedes that was the #2 car 3 cars produced in the configuration.. On this very forum and another people swore up and down the car did not exist and was not available...those were the days when you had to contact the classic center in Germany give them the VIN and wait forever for them to respond..

Young and stupid, I parted out the rusted hulk and two months later I letter arrived from Germany detailing every piece of info on the car along with an offer of $18,000.00 us dollars for the car if it was complete.

I bought the car for $1000.00 and parted it out for $4500.00 At 29 years old I listened to wisdom about the car and figured it was a engine swap.

this was a w108 1967 300SEB (Mercedes Designation, Not mine)
M189 6 cylinder with 5 speed manual and Air Suspension...

I remember it clearly THERE IS NO 108 Air suspension car, LET alone a ZF 5 speed w108 Air Suspension car...

I still cry a little now, as chances of finding another
1967 300 SEB M189/5 speed manual Air suspension car would be impossible and even if I did the price would be more than every 8 cars I own total including my Ferrari 348 and Porsche 993 widebody cab.

Only the VIN will the tale and even then its not absolute, As my 300 SEB Vin according to online experts was a 4 speed manual with Coil springs AN COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE AIR SUSPENSION. I still cry for myself now

Wanted:
w126 Left euro headlight, Someone that can refinish my wood in Grey woodgrain
Helpful Positive responses, Negativity Keep quiet

Fair enough, I could be completely wrong. That has yet to be determined because the OP hasn't posted a vin. What is fact is that I own a 1978 107026, which as you know is the car that the 5.0 liter engine was developed for by Mercedes. It is improbable that any 5.0's found their way into SL's a full model year earlier than the SLC's they were developed for and 3 years earlier than Mercedes documented.

Special things could happen. 1977 was the first year for the aluminum block, and as dgosh28 says, it was intended for the SLC at that time (and 1978 and 1979 too). However, cars could be ordered with options not available in the U.S., so maybe it is possible that someone ordered a 450sl and had the engine upgraded to a 5.0, or maybe MB even knew that they eventually would do this and started the 107046 line in 1977 but the production numbers were so low that they didn't officially offer it.

As we all should know, production year doesn't seem to mean as much to Mercedes Benz as the VIN number / range do.

So let's hear what the VIN is.

48hp has an AMG modified w123 wagon with 5.0 block # ~1500. Therefore he calls is an SLC powered Wagon.

It would be interesting to hear what engine block number this 1977 500sl has.

More info and pics please!!
