Total newbie wants to join the club
I am a complete newbie who is at the very beginning stages of searching for a late 60s/early 70s Mercedes Sedan. I'm hesitant to cite an exact model as I'm not solid on which I want! As of now I think I've limited it down to a 200 or 300 series but this is not set in stone by any means. My main criteria is the aesthetics of the vehicle and these models fit the bill on this front. What I am set on is the color: tobacco brown with beige interior.
Some background: I live in New York City and haven't owned a car in nearly 15 years. I don't need a car, I just really really want a Mercedes from this time period! I've loved them since I was 16 and my obsession was recently reignited when I saw one on the road a few years ago.
I won't be driving daily and when I do it would be for relatively short distances, less than 10 miles round trip on average. Occasionally there could be a longer trip but these would be once a month at most. Like I said, I don't need a car, I just want it so bad!
I would buy one in "solid" condition, cosmetically and mechanically.
I'm turning to the community for help in a few areas:
1. Is there a good source that clearly details the differences in the models from this time period? I'm having a hard time pinpointing how the 200 differs from a 220 or a 280 or a 300 and so on and so forth. Same goes for the 1969 model vs the 70, or 71 or 72. I do understand the general differences in engine size (4.5 vs 6.3) and I think I prefer the smaller engine for fuel efficiency over power performance. I also understand the the SEL bodies have the longer wheelbase. Other than that, I'm essentially clueless.
2. I'm looking for general guidance in what to specifically look for when considering one of these and what owning one is actually like on a daily basis. Being that I haven't owned a car in quite some time, I've never owned a car of anything approaching this age and, more specifically, I have zero experience with this era of Mercedes cars... my knowledge in this area is extremely limited. Are there certain known problem areas with these models that I should be sure to check out? What are the likely realities in owning one of these? Is the upkeep a killer? I'm not looking for a car that's always in the shop and is costing considerable money just to keep it running. I'm prepared for some investment in fixing problems but I also want this to be an enjoyable experience (if that makes any sense).
I know I'm asking for a lot here and any guidance whatsoever is genuinely appreciated! Many, many thanks!
