I talked to the owner who bought the car. He said that the US dealer he ordered it from said that they would not do SLS on W114 so he made that happen with Mercedes directly. He indicated that it cost him an additional $1,000.

He then picked it up in Stuttgart and drove it around for a month in Europe before shipping back.

Also a fun feature is that he mounted a tachometer in the car. So when the car came back to the US after the month long Europe tour, the Merc dealership put in a 6.3 VDO tach where the clock is and moved the clock down to where the levers for the electric windows are.

The car does need a good detailing but appears just so delightfully original. It helps that it has all those cool stories from the owner and a tight maintenance record.

On that note, I know the engine is very robust. But how do I have to think about rebuilts and miles? The car is a bit on the high side with 170k miles ...

I would pull the hose off the valve cover and see how bad the blow by is. That's pretty easy.

My 1970 250c has a lot of blow by and it need to do a compression test on it some time soon.

My signature:
My dream car is a classic sporty five speed (stick+overdrive) convertible that seats five. If, you want 70's-80's Mercedes tuner wheels, let me know.
