Well i just got back from seeing the 73 sel in Menlo Park.
I did not take the plunge.
My first impressions were mixed. The body showed signs in various places of rust to different degrees. Bubbling at lower front wheel arches. Minor spotting around door jams and doors etc. The interior was in overall good shape, the wood dash was very nice, not dried out or cracked. The top[ wood trim did need attention but not a big deal. What surprised me was the condition of the springs all of the seats were very, very squishy. Even the rears. my previous cars were much firmer. Carpets dirty, but in good shape, windows worked in the front, but rears were jamming, probably from lack of use. Sunroof worked perfect. Engine bay generally clean no bad signs to speak of. All fluids good and clean. I checked the kingpins which seemed good. It drove very nice and tracked well with no wandering. Shifting was smooth and clean.
After the drive i wanted to jack the car to inspect structure etc. i was worried about rust and body decay. The front right i found to be rotted right
It jacked fine but at this point this turned me off. The guy selling it became quite nervous when i was jacking the car up
So i'm still in the market for a nice sel. Since seeing this car i have learned quite a bit which is going to help for the future. Thanks again to all you guys for your help. i am looking as far a field as L A. Which is about 400 miles.
So please let me know if you see anything out there
