Subframe Recall - eligible...now what?
Thanks to the forum, I called my closest MB dealership today, gave them my VIN, and inquired about the recall. I am eligible for the repair, but he immediately brought up arm bushings and "other necessary repairs". I point blank asked him wouldn't this be much more expensive through the dealership, and he offered to let me bring my own parts...but they still charge $137 an hour for labor.
I have since read the entire 19 page sticky thread about these recalls, and I am pretty terrified by the last three pages and the COSTS in particular. These are my specific questions about this:
1) Do I have to do these other things for the subframe to be reinforced? Is replacement of the bushings an essential part of the process, or can I take it somewhere else after and have it done for less? Does it have to be done at all? Can I say, "just replace the free things" and walk out with a safe car when they are done?
2) Since they are already under the car, should I have them look at the flex discs, timing chains, etc, or should I have someone else do this? Could a regular mechanic do these things, or does it need to be someone with extensive Mercedes experience? How difficult are these things to get to under the vehicle?
To be honest, dealers terrify me. I already feel vulnerable because all I am doing is regurgitating information provided by you all without any real concept of how the mechanics of my vehicle actually work (on the upside, I still feel like I know a hell of a lot more than I knew yesterday :-) I am concerned about being taken advantage of in this situation, ESP. after reading the thread.
3) can someone give me a rough overview of how this is going to go down, and what to expect? I'm excited to start making progress, but my anxiety level is through the roof at the moment.
