Subframe Recall - eligible...now what?
I just bought a 1971 250 that apparently has the same subframe. I always thought it was BS that the 81-85 v8 107s and the 6-cyl 280 107s did not get covered under this "recall" (technically a "Service campaign" I believe which is luckily still open). 40 year old cars still being covered? That is pretty good service!
Anyway, now it looks like the only cars covered were North American (or only American???) iron block v8s, which must have been the heaviest of all the engines laid on top of this subframe, probably having a higher crack rate, and maybe cracking earlier than others, thus the campaign.
If you bring up this topic in the 107 forum, where most 450sl/SLC owners get their information, you will see that it is simply a "must do" for Mercedes to either weld on gussets or replace the subframe with the updated 560sl 86-89 model subframe.
Now that I know the subframe was used in so many other cars (about 2 million w114/5) I am surprised to hear that anyone would considered acceptable to:
- weld a cracked subframe
- not even add gussets when the subframe is cracked
- not generally add gussets as preventative maintenance.
It depends on where you "come from" I guess. I came from the 107 forum. Maybe if you come from working on cars like my $500 1971 250, then why would you spend about $120 on some pieces of filler metal from MB or ever even consider the concept of going to the trouble to replace the subframe?
Apparently the gussets are currently not available from MB, but I would expect that they will make them available again. My understanding is that others are in the process of doing some production runs on these while MB is not providing them.
