I will check. Can you see it in the video in the FS forum?
I bet it is junk though.

That seal is ripped.

I just tried to get the car running again today by myself, with no other assistance (other than my 7 year old daughter to turn the key) and failed. The seller started the car up (about 15 minutes after we arrived, but I don't think the car was "warm" when we got there), and my mechanic friend apparently held the butterfly open when we tried to start it and get it off the trailer, and got it running for several minutes warmed up with the 2000 rpm idle. The other day (when I took videos) I had better success getting it running. It might actually be almost out of fuel. I don't know. I need to go back with something flammable, to either start the car... or maybe burn it to the ground.

The day I took the videos the car started but ran the way I pictured in the FS videos. I never got it warmed up before needing to return to work.

Today I ran over with my daughter and got the car running almost as well, but not as well. Again, I had to get home. Many start attempts were worse, only getting what sounded like a single explosion.

Later I got a chance to get some new gas, starting fluid, carb/injector cleaner, and decided I should give the car a jump to make sure it wasn't a weak battery causing any problems. I got about a gallon of fresh gas (regular) in the tank (because I didn't bring a funnel and couldn't pour from my 5 gallon gas can). I tried starting. Similar results. Next I tried the ether/starting fluid. Not much of anything better. Never got the car running. I was again running out of time.

I was confident I was getting air. Confident I was getting combustible stuff in the carb, probably too rich I guess, but I wasn't confident about the spark.

Running out of time, I opened the distributor and looked at the points, and decided to try adjusting them. They were burnt, as was the rotor and cap. Rushing, I put my screwdriver in there before I shut off the ignition, and got a tiny spark. I never got combustion spark again. It may just be because I incorrectly eyeball gapped the points, but I wonder if I fried something with my tiny spark. Any ideas?

I need to go back when I can gap the points properly and get someone to crank while I measure the dwell.

Can anone verify that my car,
Vin = 114 011 12 002569

... has a standard ignition system, and not a transistorized ignition system?

I'm hoping to go back and properly set the points gap (0.3-0.4 mm) and hopefully get the car running so I can bring it home to have more time to work on it.

Edit:
I thought this was a helpful thread, making it look like I have a transistorized ignition. I hope I didn't fry it. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/vint...250c-m130.html

More info looking like transistorized:

Gapped points and scraped green crud off them. Wiped oil and soot off spark plugs, scraped blackness off rotor and cap. And finally worked the crap out of the system, what do you know... It runs and idles now! I drove it home. Wipers work (thought broke before). Power steering does not, and front passenger tire going felt didn't make the drive home any easier. Now I can maybe justify putting some plugs and a new set of points in it. I can also measure dwell and timing etc.

I was surprised to see the distributor can not be rotated to alter the timing. It all must be done via the points gap???

Excited that the car is "running" I went out tonight well after it was cooled to see what a cold start is like. Here is the result:

No sense in fouling things up until I get new plugs. This is the first plug I pulled out, and they all looked like this:

Attachment 815097

For now, I've decided NOT to part out the car.

107 is my home forum, and having what appears to be a worthless w114, I think I have decided to give a go at welding on this w114 before touching the 280slc with the welder. But before worrying about cosmetics, you've taught me to take car of the mechanicals, which fortunately appear to be very simple on this w114. Without what I had learned on the 107 forum, I would be hopeless with the condition of this hunk of junk. When I started with the 107s, I knew about the same amount as the previous owner does about cars. It took me months to learn what points were and that they need some adjustment. Now, I feel that with just a few hours, I've been able to make decent progress. I can't wait to fix the spark issues with this car, and then get the power steering and brakes working, and determine if the carbs even have any issue.
