I was looking for a couple of these a year or so back. They are incredibly hard to find but metric motors has rebuilt units for sale. i think the main reason the 230 is hard to find is because the oil pump was dodgy .Mercedes no longer supplies a pump for these but gets modified units from metric. When the pump goes you have a 230SL grenade.

As a slightly different approach to your question, if you are going to put a non-original engine in a 230 SL, why not put a 250 or 280 engine into it? Much easier to find...

I am in the processes of finalizing the purchase of a 1966 230SL that I am planning on using as a parts car. At least at the moment. It was built in December 1966 so will be titled as a 1967 most likely. Once I get it and get a chance to look it over really well I'll make a final decision whether to restore it or part it out. When is was taken out of service for some body work 3 years ago it was running fine but has not been stored in the most favorable of conditions so I can't attest to whether it will run or not. (It was a settlement on a bankruptcy/mechanics lean) I'll find out when I get it and can go over the car in detail That will probably not be until May or so.

If you'll send me a private message with a way to get in touch with you or save my info and check back later I'll let you know what I decide. I really want to restore it but I don't know the condition with regard to rust and other major possible issues.

Not really relevant for original poster. If it's your engine maybe start a new thread?
