Worth it for a parts car?

I am thinking about buying this 1973 280 SE as a parts car for my 1973 280SEL:
1973 Mercedes Benz 280 SE

I am working on getting the price down. For my car I need a few things like tail light, steering wheel, radio, dash. I would probably just try to part out the rest of the car. Do you all think it is even worth the trouble? I figure I could at least break even on the parts I need. I know I am always looking for parts, but I wasn't sure how in demand these parts are. Any advice?

Thanks!

how sad! looks like the car was in pretty good condition, there would be a lot of usable parts on it.

I know. Interior is in really good shape. He is thinking about sending it to the scrap yard, which would be a shame.

Looks like a lot of usable parts on there.
Well, do the math and see how numbers add up if you were to go buy the parts you need separate.
Scraping it wont get him half what he's asking.
He probably just wants it out of his yard which is a good bargaining point for you.
Hell, this might even be a future resto project for you if you have the space. Good luck. Later.

If he's thinking about sending it to the scrap yard then his price list on Craigslist ($3700) is foolish. I think it would be a great $2000 parts car. Depends on the tires, interior (which if nicely re-done is worth a fair amount), radio (he spent too much on ebay), etc.

It really comes down to seller's state of mind. He's talking scrap yards and he's talking $3700 at the same time. So one of them isn't correct. I wouldn't pay $3700 for the car. I also wonder really how much damage is done to the engine...

So keep him talking about scrap yards and find out how much you can really get the car for.

Thanks for the responses everyone! Got him down to $1900, plus he'll pay for towing. Trying to get him down to $1,500, so we'll see. Interior is in really nice shape. I wasn't able to look under the hood because it wouldn't open. I was thinking the same thing about the engine. I figured all plastic parts and wires would be damaged under the hood. He said front/rear glass was replaced in 2009. He wasn't sure about tires, but was going to try and find the maintenance records. This car is too far beyond my knowledge for a project car, but it should help put some finishing touches on my SEL, and hopefully help other people out who have been searching for parts.

Cool, looks like it's almost yours.
Just don't sound too excited about it, cause he may not want to negotiate any lower.
There's always an absolute lowest price on anything, you just have to find it. Later.

Is the interior a color that works for you? Rear door panels and rear carpet will be wrong length...

What a crying shame. The first thing I saw was the paint on the hood (before I read the description).

if you go this route, I'd be interested in bumpers and the long front-to-back roof gutter chrome strip, passenger side... Maybe even the ECU
