Chain noise is no good. What did you replace while in there (rails, tensioner?). I had chain slap which went away with a new tensioner. Old one appeared fine, but obviously not.
I'm assuming your 3.5 has same clearance specs as the early 4.5 with solid lifters. Clearance is .1mm inlet and .2mm exhaust with engine cold. .15mm and .25mm with engine at 60c.
With cam lobe pointed away from rocker arm, the clearance should be as stated above. If too tight, tighten the ball stud. If too loose, back the ball stud out. The ball studs do not have a jam nut or anything. They have an interference fit in the threaded bushing in the head. The spec is at least 20Nm to turn the ball stud. If less, you need to replace the ball stud and/or the bushing. If you can not achieve the clearance spec, they sell various thicknesses of thrust pieces that sit on the valve stem between the rocker and valve stem.
