The 180 Ponton was the lowest power gas Mercedes, with economy gearing. so slow like a 240D. The 190 Pontons had a wood strip atop the dash., but on the 180, all hard interior trim was brown bakelite, which is nearly indestructable unless you smash it. Even when sun-faded, it can be waxed to restore it's brown luster, but It looks really tacky painted white (Though the bakelite would probably survive a paint-thinner bath if one wanted to take all the trouble)
For me, the cheap-looking silver respray looks tacky too.
I could live with the new interior upholstery, but the speaker-holes are a real turn-off. There are other ways to get decent speakers in a vintage car without hacking-up the interior!
And does it actually say 'corolla' on the floor-mat?!
Happy Motoring, Mark
