Just purchased a 1972 W115

Not my first Merc but certainly the oldest I've ever owned.

I have the tear the engine down. It was running but I think it dropped a valve. It'll only turn 180 degrees in either direction

It needs work. There are a few rust holes. So that'll get fixed.

It is an automatic and the shifter is on the column. Auto shifts smoothly.

The ODO shows 62K. So not sure of the exact mileage.

Looks like it was a really dark green. With a really dark blue interior.

take a photo of the plate in front of the radiator.
It will give original paint color code, and options ordered for that car.....
Dark Green paint and dark blue seats does not sound like a factory combo, more like repainted and interior swapped along the way.
Assume mileage to be 162k or 262k judging from the worn out seats (sorry).
You can see the valve stems when you take the valve cover off and see if one is missing .
It may also have jumped timing on you (loose chain tensioner) or chain snapped.
All fixable as long as it wasn't running fast when it happened. These are sturdy engines.
Good luck, hope to see the progress.
I can help with parts, if needed.

chain seems intact. but loose. I hope it just jumped a few teeth and needs to be retimed with a new tensioner. that would be so awesome!

Anyone ever add a turbo to one of these engines?

not a turbo, but a 280 or even a 280E motor with a few extra hp. (DOHC M110)
Pretty common motor even into the late eighties.
Seems easier to convert to than a different engine or even car brand altogether
