Looked at a 1973 280SEL 4.5
... and bought it the next weekend....
So after looking around the internet I decided to go look at a 1973 280SEL 4.5 off craigslist that had no pics or description. This was the second vintage Merc I looked at, the first being a Fintail at a consignment shop in Texas that looked cool and sparked my interest...
The story goes like this. Fathers car and he's at work, but son is home. The son doesn't know much about the car, didn't even know the father was selling it. Said he has it for about 6+ months. The car ran but rough and the father was chasing down oil leaks. Currently, the valve covers are off as well as throttle body, plug wires and distributor cap. Engine bay is greasy in general so I'm thinking it wasn't taken care of very well. It does have a new fuel ppump and filter, but its just held in with zip-ties...
The body is in pretty good shape except for a belt buckle size dent in the top of the driver side fender, probably from working on the car. One piece of rear quarter panel trim is missing. All floors are solid with small bubbling in 2 spots near the rocker panels. Bottoms of doors look good. Trunk floor is good but driver side trunk well is rusted through, softball size. Paint is dull but looks original. Glass is ok and there is a sun roof, but no battery so cant test the electronics. Interior is complete but rough. No documentation, just the manual in the glove box.
I really like the thought of an SEL for the extra room and the 4.5 v8. Light blue with medium blue interior is ok but I want Grey (not silver) with red interior. It is the last year of the 280SEL W108 cars. He listed it as a 1973 but it has a build of 6/72 on the door tag....
He listed for $2200 and when I texted him about coming to see it, he said $1600 before I said anything.... I ended up paying $1300.00
I'll keep this thread going as I slowly clean everyting up and try to salvage and reassemble the intake/fuel system.
