Easy job to trace, yes. Behind the spare wheel is a small, squarish plastic tank with hard plastic lines to the front of the car and to the gas tank. IT allows the tank to expand and contract with heat without spilling gas. Vapor goes back to the intake, with the liquid back to the tank when it expands.
Look under the car, at the tank, and search for small lines going into the trunk - replace any deteriorated lines with stuff from any autoparts store - rubber hoses like this are common and not unique to Mercedes. Same thing in the trunk - look for deteriorated lines or unions.
