M130 engine head replacement

Hi,
The engine head number on my car is 130 016 20 01.
There is a good deal on a new old stock M130 head but the part number is:
130 010 24 21.
Engine number is 130 923 12 010 691
Are these two interchangeable?
The seller claims it will work fine but can not answer why the different part numbers.
Thank you very much.

According to the EPC:

The number you gave for your existing head is not a good one. You may be looking at a casting number.

The number for the new head is good for engines as of 010729. Earlier engines like yours had 130 010 91 20.

Kind of a crap shoot. Before buying, I would put the two heads side-by-side and to a very close inspection.

After a little research. Mercedes did not sell bare heads. The part number refers to a head with additional parts. The casting number is what identifies the basic head. Somewhere there might be a table that cross-references head numbers to casting numbers, but I haven't seen one.

Can you get the casting number for the head that's for sale?

It's the big number on the lower left side - like your 130 016 number.

He says

The casting no is 130 016 26 01 = MB PART NO 130 010 91 20 = 130 010 24 21

So if your engine benumbed is 010 691 this head will fit

Is it true?

kav, I've always wondered why your head has 280 S/A on it. Seems to me that may indicate if was from a 280 engine. my car is away in storage so I cant look at it.

I found this thread that talks about diff compression ratio heads, there is a chart for SL's but is shows there are many diff casting numbers that fit diff engines.

Pagoda SL Group Technical Manual :: Engine / CylinderHead

they are talking about fuel injected engines, not carbs.

maybe mb classic can help?

Who knows?

The EPC says that head 91 20 is for engines up to 010728, and 24 21 is for engines 010729 and beyond. Your engine is 010691, so unclear to me why the seller thinks that head will work on your engine.

Sometimes a different part number means a minor engineering change like bigger cooling passages, and sometimes it's a major change.

Unless you have a compelling reason to replace the head, I would stick with what you've got.
