Interchangeability of 4-Speed Gearboxes
Was wondering today about the 4 speed gearboxes, and how/if they've changed over the years. The latest one I can think of is on the W202 cars. The earliest, probably intro'd with the pontons/gullwing/190sl. I know the yoke that sticks out from the top of the transmission varies (some are straight, others angle down, others are on the side), but the actual meat of these things (bearing size, bell housing mounting, etc), and they drastically different? People swap out differentials all the time to get more favorable gearing, but you don't hear much about swapping gearboxes. Could, hypothetically, I swap the gearbox in my ponton for something that will offer a longer final gear ratio?
